An overdue visit to Valencia

An overdue visit to Valencia this Spring made for mixed emotions about the Calatrava extravaganza that is the City of Arts and Sciences.

There are lots of tasty reasons to go to Valencia but to witness Santiago Calatrava and Felix Candela‘s brave engineering and architecture is most certainly one of the main attractions.  It’s only 9 years since completion of the Palau (the Opera house) and sadly most of it was under scaffold for repair.  It hasn’t weathered at all well and there seems to be mixed feelings about Calatrava and at one point the City was attempting to sue him (good article in Dezeen last year).

Yet, on a bright blue sky day where the whites bleach in the sunshine the buildings are still dazzling and finding good slices to photograph was really exciting.  Shooting in the car park before it got busy was especially inspiring but I do love a block of concrete.

It’s definitely still worth a visit to experience the bold visionary that is Calatrava.
